The formal beginning of the Holy Name Society is credited to Pope Gregory X who, in 1274 commissioned the newly founded Dominican Order to concentrate its efforts on preaching greater devotion to the Holy Name. St. Matthew Holy Name’s history is not quite that long but suffices to say we have existed for quite a few years. “Back in the day”, we had quite a large membership and were very active in the church and local community. The years have taken a toll on our membership numbers and the amount of activities we participate in. We may have lost members but, our focus and mission still remain as strong as ever. Our group promotes the love and respect of Christ’s Holy Name through prayer, mass and example. We support various charities like St. Vincent DePaul Society, Christian foundation for children and aging and groups like scouting, St. Matthew youth a.k.a, “Shelly’s Kids” and the annual Mother’s Day/Family breakfast. We also provide entertainment through our annual Smoker held the last Friday before Ash Wednesday; this by the way is our main fund raiser. Just like another “group”, we’re looking for a “FEW GOOD MEN”. We meet every second Sunday, September through June for the 7:30 Mass followed by a short breakfast meeting in the Good Sheppard room. We realize that many demand your time and talents. Our small group of Christian men is looking to expand in numbers and fun activities; yes, activities can be fun! We don’t bite and invite you to our next meeting. COME JOIN US
