Our K5 classroom at St. Matthew's is filled with young learners who are excited to experience school activities each day. We participate in songs and lessons where students are encouraged to practice the skills of being a good friend to others and communicating in a polite manner. "Hello Neighbor" is one song where students shake hands to greet each other for the day. Some of our other favorite songs include "Peanut Butter" and "Letter Aerobics" by Dr. Jean. Moving and grooving to songs help exert some energy and learn educational concepts.
"Daily News" is one of our favorite speaking and writing lessons. Students take turns sharing a personal news story while I guide the spelling and writing of the news. All students have their own Daily News form to fill in as I write on large chart paper in the front of the room. This teaches phonics, letter recognition, punctuation and much more. Students are encourage to take their written news home and share it with their families.
